In March of 2015, Rachel Bird & Co celebrated a decade of providing quality legal services to the Canberra and surrounding New South Wales public. We travel to assist you in court matters in Queanbeyan, Yass, Goulburn, Batemans Bay and the Sydney area on a regular basis. We appear in Local, District, Supreme and Federal Court jurisdictions. At the commencement of the practice, Rachel Bird worked as a sole practitioner and has from there increased the practice areas of the firm to now provide legal services encompassing: Criminal and Traffic Law, Family Law, Civil Litigation including Personal Injury and ACT Workers Compensation, Contested Estates, Wills, Powers of Attorney and Probate Matters, and general commercial disputes.
Rachel Bird & Co incorporated Butler & Co Lawyers into the practice in July 2007. The firm now has a number of lawyers who practice in a variety of legal areas. All lawyers with the firm have experience in both New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory and are able to deal with issues arising in both jurisdictions.

Rachel holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree, Bachelor of Laws degree and a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the Australian National University and was admitted to practice in both the ACT and NSW in 1998. Having 18 years of experience with NSW and ACT Court work, Rachel spent her first four years practising in NSW, with the remaining time based in the ACT while still also practicing in NSW.
Rachel was a NSW Young Lawyers regional delegate for the Southern Highlands between 1998 and 2002, and a member of the ACT Young Lawyers Committee in 2002 and 2003. Rachel was a member of the ACT Law Society Criminal Committee and ACT Law Society Social Functions and Law Week committee between 2003 and 2006. Rachel was also a Law Society Counsellor between 2004 and 2006. She is also an associate member of the NSW Law Society. Rachel is a member of the Women Lawyers Association of Australian Capital Territory.
Rachel has completed the Australian Institute of Advocacy Workshop as part of her ongoing legal training. Rachel has been involved in coaching the NSW and ACT Law Society ‘Mock Trial’ competition for school children in the ACT. She has acted as a magistrate/judge in the competition as well as acting as a judge for the ANU Mooting Competition and ALSA in the past. She is, through her firm, a mentor to International and Canberra based law students.
Rachel has worked and practiced in the areas of Criminal Law and Traffic Law, Family Law and Commercial and Estate Litigation over the past 18 years. She is a professional working mother and has the ability to decipher her client’s needs with speed and efficiency. Her personable and pragmatic approach to all matters ensures her clients a successful outcome always.
Angus holds a Bachelor of Laws and Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the Australian National University. He was admitted to practice in 2010. Criminal Law was a particular area of interest for Angus since he commenced University, and he took the opportunity to work in Criminal Law for the last 2 years of his study. Since admission he has worked predominantly in Criminal and Traffic Law, gaining a significant amount of experience in all kinds of matters.
Having spent some 7 years managing pubs and clubs in the ACT whilst studying, Angus has developed an effective communication style that plays well both in conference and in Court. He has attended advocacy workshops including specialised expert evidence seminars, and has been involved in training newly admitted legal staff. Angus has worked as both prosecutor for the ACT Director of Public Prosecutions and now as a private defence criminal lawyer.
A known football tragic, on the weekends Angus can usually be found glued to Fox Sports, either celebrating a Brumbies victory or lamenting a Raiders defeat. You might also see Angus walking the streets of Braddon with Henry the retired greyhound (easily mistaken for a small horse).

Toni holds a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Bachelor of Laws degree with honours from the University of Canberra. He obtained a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the New South Wales College of Law and was admitted to practice in 2013. During the last year of his study he worked in the area of criminal law and since admission has continued to work in the areas of criminal and traffic law in both the ACT and NSW court systems.
Toni played rugby union for a number of years before studying law. His experience has given him the confidence to communicate with clients from all walks of life and effectively advocate on their behalf. He has appeared in a number of high profile cases since joining Rachel Bird & Co.
Toni has worked on matters concerning associations and not for profit organisations in the ACT and is able to assist with setting up and resolving disputes among association members. Toni has attended a number of practical and informative law seminars as part of his ongoing continuing legal training in order to assist clients with their matters. Toni is also working with Angus Bucknell, our seasoned personal injury veteran, in motor vehicle compensation and personal injury matters.
As a Tongan speaking lawyer, Toni enjoys working with people of all different backgrounds and nationalities as well as members of the Tongan and Pacific community. Toni is a member of the Civic Uniting Church which he attends on most Sundays with his wife and daughter. Toni’s determination on his client’s behalf ensures all Toni’s clients achieve the best possible outcome.
Angus Bucknell completed his Diploma in Law and was admitted to the Supreme Court of New South Wales in 1997. In 2002 he was admitted to the Supreme Court of the Australian Capital Territory.
Angus has more than 20 years experience in personal injury litigation including: negligence claims, workers compensation matters, motor accident claims and Comcare matters. Angus was formerly a partner at a leading Trade Union firm and was also the President of the ACT branch of the Australian Lawyers Alliance during this time. Angus is currently a Counsellor of the ACT Law Society and has been since 2012.
Angus brings a wealth of knowledge to your matters. Angus is a passionate advocate for the rights of injured plaintiffs and has been instrumental in retaining and improving the rights of injured people.
Angus has also never missed a Brumbies home game since the club formed in 1996.
