Drugs and Alcohol

It is not unusual for drugs and/or alcohol to ultimately lead to police involvement and subsequent charges. The most prevalent offence currently coming before the Courts in both ACT and NSW is drink driving, and recent new laws in relation to drug driving is resulting in people appearing in relation to that charge before the Court more often. Alcohol and drugs often impact on a person’s decision making ability and can ultimately lead to conduct giving rise to other charges. Drug related matters can also include serious matters, such as trafficking and cultivation. In addition to providing you with advice in relation to pleas and potential defences, our solicitors are able to refer you to appropriate rehabilitation programs, if you require such assistance. If you have a drug or alcohol related criminal charge, please telephone 02 6248 6616 to speak with one of our solicitors.

Superior Court Trials, Sentences and Appeals

If you are facing a more serious criminal matter, there can be big decisions to make in terms of whether to have your matter dealt with in one of the more superior Courts. Alternatively, following finalisation of a matter, there may be grounds of appeal in relation to either conviction or sentence. We have experience in dealing with the most serious of matters, including child-sex offences, burglary and theft, sexual assaults, drug matters, and appeals. In some instances, your matter may be serious enough to warrant instructing a Barrister, in addition to your Solicitor. As a firm, we have developed an excellent rapport with many of the region’s most sought after Barristers, and are able to find the right professional for your task. If you are facing a serious criminal matter, or need some advice in relation to prospects for appeal, please telephone 02 6248 6616 to speak with Rachel Bird.

Family Violence

Family Violence encompasses all criminal offending occurring within a relevant relationship as defined by legislation. In New South Wales, these matters are dealt with as with any other criminal matter, but here in the ACT, there is a separate jurisdiction in the Magistrates Court to deal with Family Violence. Common offences occurring in this area include assault and damage to property. Our solicitors are able to advise you in relation to pleas, and potential defences, as well as negotiating with the prosecution of your behalf. It is not unusual for a person facing a Family Violence offence to also need assistance in negotiating bail conditions, to allow them and their family to get through what can be a very difficult time. If you need some assistance with a family violence matter, please telephone 02 6248 6616 to speak with Rachel Bird or Toni Tu’ulakitau.
